A PHOTO ESSAY
The coal mine is closed
Appearing white with polished, aluminium facades reflecting the surroundings and encircled by a fantastic green landscape, it is designed by the Japanese architectural firm SANAA in collaboration with New York firm Imrey Culbert, French landscape architect Catherine Mosbach, and museographer Studio Adrien Gardère. The museum is built on an old mining site abandoned before 1960. It is stunning and alienated compared to the town blending into the landscape, and far away you dare to imagine the mountains of coal.
a visual story about epiphytes
We named this story 'badlands' because epiphytes are plants that need nothing from their surroundings. They get all their nutrition from the air. Badlands is a geographic area on a ground with no layer of soil - it is an arid desert, where nothing grows. We liked the contrast between the two natural phenomena, as well as the divergence between the unglazed ceramics and hard industrial materials.
Design talk with
STUDIO AMANDA LILHOLT
We visited designer Amanda Lilholt in her studio-apartment located in the narrow streets of Østerbro in Copenhagen on a cold December day. She opened the door and said hello with her brown, intelligent eyes and invited us inside where she served a damn fine cup of espresso, while we talked about her thoughts on life and design.

2150 NORDHAVN guide
Appeal Magazine shows you an entirely new side of Copenhagen, mostly unknown to tourist. The new area Nordhavn (The North Harbour), with its very own zip code 2150, is emerging north of the old centre of Copenhagen. Innovative interior design shops are popping up here, where well-established design-houses like Paustian and Gubi have resided for decades. Within the last year, many new showrooms, trendy plant shops, as well as cafés and restaurants have opened here. It has also become one of the favourite places for the Copenhageners to take a dip in the sea. So if you are visiting 2150 in the summertime remember your towel and swimsuit for bathing.
THE HOUSE THAT MERETE AND FREDERIK BUILT
Two architects from Frederiksberg in Copenhagen, Merete Brun Ejlers and Frederik Ejlers, have made their dreams come true. They have designed and built their own house on the small island Læsø in the Kattegat in Denmark.
We visited FONDAZIONE ACHILLE CASTIGLIONI during the design week in Milan 2018
It is a systematic world, where drawings and archives are labelled with numbers on tubes, that in addition to their function, which is to store and categorise, becomes an aesthetic experience, like the designs that over time have been created by Achille Castiglioni.
